Now that I've completed 22 sessions of neurofeedback, I have enough substantive material to write a review. I first read about neurofeedback in a book called, "The Body Keeps the Score," by Bessel van der Kolk. I initially believed neurofeedback was too expensive for me to undergo, but after many sessions of talk therapy and months of another kind of therapy called EMDR, I came to realize that those treatments, although very effective in their own right, were not going to ameliorate a brain fog that I just couldn't shake. So I decided to take the plunge and seriously consider neurofeedback.
After a lot of googling and researching about neurofeedback, I contacted three neurofeedback providers in Dallas. I made an appointment for a free consultation at Quantum Holistic Health Center (QHHC) and Dr. Sattari promptly called me to follow up. During the free consult, she asked a lot of questions, answered all of my questions, and gave me lots of helpful information about neurofeedback and QHHC. I spoke to the other two neurofeedback providers I found in Dallas, but Dr. Sattari was by far the most knowledgable and most impressive. She really tailored her comments and recommendations to my individual needs. Despite my reservations about the cost, I was so impressed with her that I purchased a package of 40 neurofeedback sessions a few days after our initial meeting.
Before neurofeedback, I struggled greatly with organization and task completion. The idea of organizing my home or a bunch of objects was daunting. I would often lose my train of thought and get confused when it came to starting or finishing a task like writing a long email or doing a new project at work. Now, I think more clearly and can much more easily articulate my thoughts (as evidenced by this Yelp review.)
There have been other benefits too. Despite being a naturally outgoing person, I had a lot of social anxiety that has dissipated since I got neurofeedback. I used to avoid acquaintances if I saw them randomly out in public because I was afraid I wouldn't know what to say. In fact, I barely realized I had this avoidant behavior until I stopped doing it. My hand eye coordination has improved and so has my ability to listen and follow directions. I haven't tracked it empirically, but I think I make fewer "silly" mistakes like skipping words when writing emails and making miscalculations while doing simple arithmetic.
The only caveat I have is that neurofeedback worked so well for me because I complied with the protocols. I came in for sessions 3-4 times a week religiously, and rarely had any caffeine or stimulants before sessions. Like going to the gym, you get out of neurofeedback what you put into it.
I can't thank Dr. Sattari and QHHC enough for helping me gain mental clarity, increase my self-esteem, and feel more in control of my life.
